The Economist Event: ‘The Ghana Summit’ set to take place from the 29th - 30th October 2013 at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra, Ghana….

"Africa’s recent economic surge is fuelling optimism about the continent’s prospects and positioning it in the minds of many investors and businesses as a significant opportunity.

Blessed with a wealth of natural resources and a large, young and growing population, many economies in Africa are enjoying rates of growth and development that are the envy of the emerging world.

While sections of the continent still face steep challenges, Ghana is well placed to benefit from the forces of beneficial change in the region.

*Strong and sustained growth in recent years - with the country benefiting from high global commodity prices and continued political stability

*A youthful and better educated workforce, with half of the population under 20

*The emergence of a new generation of tech-savvy entrepreneurs. Ghana has one of the most developed telecommunications sectors in Africa, with mobile phone penetration surpassing the 100% barrier

*A concerted effort by the government to attract foreign investment and improve ease of doing business..

However, Ghana faces serious challenges too. Its economy remains vulnerable to external factors—in particular the risk of a slowdown in China, the global commodity cycle and high inflation.

The Ghana Summit will openly explore the risks and opportunities—tensions and compromises—that are facing this thriving global African economy. It will bring together over 150 leaders from government, business and finance who are invested or otherwise interested in Ghana's future."  The Economist

Paulina says: I was busy minding my own beeswax when I heard Ghana’s president, John Dramani Mahama and fashion designer and founder of ‘Made in Africa’ Oswald Boateng mentioned in the same sentence – and was like what ….is Mr Boateng getting into politics!!!

Thankful Oswald isn’t going into Ghanaian poli-tricks but he is part of an elegant panel of movers and shakers including Matthieu Pigasse, CEO of Lazard France/Africa (he’s the handsome guy France/EU sent to advise “the Greek government on how to renegotiate its mountain of debt” thus I’m thinking Ghana is in safe hands --laughter) and the currant Minister of Foreign Affairs & Regional Integration, HE Hanna Tetteh at the upcoming The Economist Events: ‘The Ghana Summit’ 2013….

Honestly….if I hadn’t just seen this must-go event advertised on ABN TV Sky 290 I wouldn’t have a clue that it was going on... So I’m thinking that it’s important that we all put it out there as I think it’s one of the best things to hit the Accra metropolis in a long while…

Knowing that the world’s gaze will be on Ghana at such a prestigious event is wonderful, but much more important is the opportunity to address some of our economical shortcomings and hopefully, attract some serious investments.

My only concern…….dot, dot, dot…. is our roadsssssssss, but as these delegates are only going to be in what I call the triangle of fabulousness ---all those yummy areas/havens/postcodes that can be reached within 15 minutes or less from Kotokraba airport, sorry Kotoka International Airport (KIA to you and me) –they will be safe…Amen

To EDUCATE professionals and consumers on hair and beauty!

Hair and beauty is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and in Ghana is no exception. Over the past decade, consumers have been introduced with numerous products aimed at enhancing their natural beauty.

According to research, the average Ghanaian spends between 30 to 500 GHC ($15 - $250) every month on hair and beauty products. According to a recent report, women continue to treat themselves to branded products even in the current difficult economic climate.

The hair and beauty industry needs a platform like exhibitions and seminars to sustain its rate of growth and for various brands to leverage and draw synergy from these events to promote themselves and educate the professionals and consumers.

Ghana Hair and Beauty Expo allows companies to interface with thousands of high spending consumers. It is your opportunity to make a pitch for your product or service. It is the ideal place to create brand awareness or reinforce brand loyalty. This event is the only medium that allows you to interface with thousands of visitors over one weekend. It is the most effective means of meeting your customers and end users

The Ghana Hair and Beauty Expo recognises the important role of vital and desperately needed charities throughout the country. Providing funding for these charities increases their ability to help those within our community in a time of need. This Hair and Beauty expo brings together hair, beauty and wellness professionals to support this philanthropic cause.

Our commitment to these charities is driven by our belief in not taking life for granted and giving a gift of kindness to support their humanitarian work. These worthwhile organisations will be on-hand to answer questions, provide information and interact with vendors and attendees.

A percentage of the proceeds from the Hair and Beauty Expo will be given to three main charities namely, Mother’s Bliss Foundation, Monte Christo Foundation and Eve’s Foundation all mainly focused on the health and wellbeing of poor mothers and hungry children nationwide.

These Charities will be in the forefront of the event as the beauty industry supports their effort to help our Ghanaian population.

Weddings in Ghana: Do you want 'Sweets for your Sweet and Sugar for your Honey' Head to Candy Land Ghana…….

A Few Pointers for your wedding 'sweet table'

Fab labels and beautiful clear glass containers are essential......

The above table displays are fab indicators that for a more glamorous, Luxe grown-up feel, you really need to display your sweets in beautifully labelled clear glass jars and bowls… You can work with a graphic designer and Candy land to achieve this. You will need to ask Candy land if they have theses retro/vintage glass containers if not you need to source them yourself.

Get Colour Wise....

Pink and white sweets in beautifully labelled glass containers....

Pink and gold candy bar......

Orange sweets...
As you plan your wedding by colour, I think it’s also important for you to try as much as possible to stick to sweets of the same colour -as it pulls everything together and looks fab. I feel that the above ‘sweet tables’ look lovely because of the use of only two colours at the most, –making them elegant, grown-up and inviting..

If you are going for sweets –I prefer the sweets to be mixed in with cupcakes and colourful macarons –turning the table into a 'dessert’s table' which I think is far nicer. You can work with the likes of Candy land and your cake maker to create this.

Fruits are Us......
I love this gorgeously juicy fruit centre piece from a wedding organised by INEN Ltd Ghana..

I’m thinking ......maybe the best balance ….is to add fruit pieces like the naturally colourful fruit kebabs and elegant glasses of fruits (above) to your 'sweet table'… it will get everybody’s sweet juices flowing..

Paulina says: Thinking of shipping hundreds of ‘Pound Shop’ bought Sweets and loads of clear glass containers and an assortment of colourful bowls to decorate your wedding table to Ghana?

Personally I prefer a cornucopia of juicy eye-popping fruits at weddings but I know that a growing number of you prefer what wedding planners call the ‘sweet table’ –all those full-to-bursting heavy-laden tables with colourful candy…and I don’t blame you as it goes down-a-treat with both adults and kids alike…

Anywaysssssss for brides-to-be wanting a ‘sweet table’ for your special day in Ghana, you no longer have to ship over a ton of sweets, a company called Candy land -touted as “Ghana's premier candy store” offers quality sweets for all occasions and can be contacted via their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Candyland/227929397221514

Save the Rex! Save the Rex! Save the Rex! Save the Rex! Save the Rex! Save the Rex! Save the Rex!

“Save the Rex!-A Kickstarter Project by AMAA Award-winning filmmaker and director Akosua Adoma Owusu to revive the REX Cinema in Accra. Please Pledge now to this cause. Thank you.” Design233

Award-winning film-maker, Akosua Adoma Owusu, has initiated a Kickstarter program to raise funds to save the defunct Rex Cinema in Accra, Ghana. The REX Cinema was built by Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah, who had a vision of creating a Ghanaian cinema industry that could be shared with the world. The REX, located in Accra, is just one of many cinemas built throughout Ghana, and like so many of the others, it’s in trouble.

Even though Ghana’s film industry has been incredibly successful, its early cinemas are on the verge of extinction, and could be sold for redevelopment. The REX Cinema hasn’t been used for the arts for years and is also at risk of being sold.

This project means a lot to Akosua Adoma Owusu and is about preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage. Her vision is to transform the REX into a creative space for art, music and film - where the next generation of Ghanaian filmmakers and artists can showcase their work. With garnered support, her project can help strengthen a cinema-going culture in Ghana.

You can read the entire piece via Design233’s website at: http://design233.com/events/rex-cinema-kickstarter.html#.UmXGk4pwbIV

Paulina says: Save the Rex! Save the Rex! Save the Rex! Save the Rex! Save the Rex! I’m exhausted that the Rex, a monument to Ghana’s golden past is in trouble. Why do we continue to sell or destroy or allow the ‘family China’ to go to rack-and-ruin???

The saving of the Rex is essential for future generations and I say that we stand beside “AMAA Award-winning filmmaker and director Akosua Adoma Owusu” to bring this national treasure back to life, it will surly add to the growing buzz of Accra….

To help Akosua Adoma Owusu raise funds to revive the REX Cinema in Accra please visit her ‘Kick Starter project space called ‘Damn The Man Save The Rex’ via: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/568625108/damn-the-man-save-the-rex#

**Honestly….I’m thinking that the big multi nationals/businesses in Ghana need to step in with funds –or maybe Ghana needs a sort of ‘National Heritage’ body that fights to save these national historical treasures… I’m sooo tired of us destroying the things that make Ghana great……. Also, this story has truly highlighted for me (again) that Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah was a great man, a complex man ---but still a great pioneering man and an innovator who truly wanted to create a great nation for the Ghana’s people….God Rest His Soul..
