Paulina says: Foundations for black skin is hard -no? I celebrated a big birthday this year, and I'm not joking but my complexion has changed. I don't know if it changed due to lack of sleep, stress or because I've finally run out of the uber expensive face cream that my lovely friend sent me last year from the beauty cupboard at La magazine (I can't afford it anywaysss) but whatever it is, -I've had to go looking for a new shade of foundation, -something I haven't done in forever as I've worn the same ole, same ole two (one for summer MAC's NW45 and another for winter Bourjois or Guerlain bronzing powders -as I tend to get a shade paler) forever.
I paid MAC a visit, checked Bourjois for their Bronzing powders -all that shimmery gold --looks fab on dark skin plus its light, and Guerlain for their Terracotta Moisturising Bronzing Powder, I also tried Make Up For Ever and Maybelline dream matte mousse et al and ended up buying..... funny enough the brand I started off with years ago, --Estée Lauder.... their Double Wear foundation -which I use for under my eyes only, to cover-up La bags, like a concealer -over my Bourjois Bronzing powder -keeping things light...

Anyway.... I'm waffling on because I know just how crazy it can get ---looking for the right foundation, soo I'm uber pleased Black Secret Makeup has upped their game and launched a comprehensive range of powders and liquid foundations -which looks like it encompasses more shades than the competition. So if you're in Ghana do check them out.. For more info visit: https://www.facebook.com/blacksecretmakeup

Title: GGBL unveils new stylish Baileys bottle

Guinness Ghana Breweries Ltd (GGBL) a subsidiary of Diageo, last Friday launched the new Baileys bottle at a special event at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

The new, sleek bottle has been heightened and the shoulders lifted, for a more elegant and striking profile. The new design of the bottle evokes the brand’s modern, feminine sense of style and celebrates the spirit of modern womanhood.

The iconic ‘Double B’ logo of the premium drink has also been given greater prominence creating a more impressive and stylish bottle. Together these features, according to GGBL, embody the brand’s positioning and ‘cream with spirit’ marketing campaign.

Renowned film producer, Shirley Frimpong Manso, and Constance Swanikei were awarded as Baileys Inspirational Ladies at the event, where they took home free bottles of the drink.

“Our new bottle is both modern and stylish, with a greater sense of femininity. Baileys is a brand that appeals specifically and uniquely to women and through this new bottle we embrace and celebrate that timeless appeal in a fresh and contemporary way”, Agnes Essah, Marketing Director of GGBL said.

Later on Saturday, GGBL held the Baileys Style Day at the Accra Mall where ladies who patronized the Mall had the treat of their life time with free facial make-ups and a glass of Baileys.

Baileys' unique combination of the best Irish cream, Irish whiskey and Ghanaian Cocoa makes it the original Irish cream.

The drink has won many accolades at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Awards. It has been awarded the 2012 Gold prize at the awards.

Over 82 million bottles of the drink are sold world-wide each year

Photography: Malte Wandel's 'PLEASE DON'T SMILE' Journey through Ghana.....

PLEASE DON'T SMILE
Malte Wandel lived for nine months of 2011 in Ghana. Among the other countries he also travelled through were neighbouring Burkina Faso and Togo. During his journeys, he produced a comprehensive series of portraits of people he met and in some cases also got to know personally. Some he photographed spontaneously, while others he visited at home in their familiar surroundings.

In the series "PLEASE DON´T SMILE", Malte Wandel successfully captures moments of the present in West African towns, from which he highlights certain protagonists and tells their stories.

Discreetly, he approaches passers-by, places eccentric individuals and representatives of unknown subcultures centre-frame and allows us an unusual view into life and personalities in today's West Africa. Directly and unmodified, Wandel's work deals with a wide variety of characters and the circumstances of their lives – during their hard daily work but also in their leisure time. As well as in the simple FARMER in Kakum (Ghana), on his way with machete and spade into the fields, carrying his lunch in a small metal cooking pot on his head, the series in FOFO shows a young man, with a set of self-made lifting weights in front of him, staring intensely and proudly into the camera, the concrete slab under him appearing to collapse under his weight.

OLD SKUUL is the name of a group of youngsters who dress in their leisure time like their forefathers did in colonial times, not African style, but European. Old photographs provide the template for their sometimes absurd interpretations of fashion.

In his full-body photographs, Malte Wandel focuses on the steadfast look into the camera and allows, with the respectful distance, space for individual expression – between humility, pride and confidence. Ghana is West Africa's great source of hope, but dreams can arise here, too, dreams based on models of the western world. With almost loving care Wandel presents in FOOTBALL PLAYER young amateurs like budding soccer stars. As youths do all over Africa, they dream of being discovered one day by the great football teams of this world and put on a particular set of outfit for every practise match.

Similarly self-aware are the SURFERS of the Ghanaian national team on the beach at Busua. The place has developed its own subculture around a local surfing shop – set up by a US-American NGO – and the young surfers stream out of their shacks carrying their boards whenever the waves are good.

19-year-old Stanley, who earns his living as a Michael Jackson look-alike in the nightlife of Ghana's capital, Wandel sets against the rocky beach at Accra, transporting him into the world of art and the artist. Here he reveals most strongly the motivation of photographers who work like him, here he clearly distances himself stylistically from pure documentation and invites the observer to reconsider photographic genres as well as the relationship between photographer and the photographed person or subject." Malte Wandel

Paulina says: Love, love the above photos of everyday people going about their everyday business in Ghana by Dutch photographer Malte Wandel. I don't know if they were exhibited in Ghana -but it would be good for the subjects to see them -no? Ghana's beloved A. B. Crentsil is Honoured at MTN's 2013 Legend and Legacy Ball......

Sooo sweet, Elizabeth Crentsil wiping her husband, our beloved A. B. Crentsil's happy tears.....

Nice man: Hassan Ayariga, Presidential candidate of PNC in the 2012 elections -singing A.B. Crentsil's Juliana watch via: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bWfIRaa7lw -Fabulous.....

He was so overcome by emotion  that as a short documentary on his music career was shown to the audience at the MTN Legends and Legacy (LAL) Ball at the Accra International Conference Centre last Saturday,   AB Crentsil could not hold back the tears.

His wife held herself together,  wiped away the tears and cuddled him like a baby being consoled by its mother.

Until that moment came, the highlife superstar had been profusely praised for his abundant contribution to the progress of  popular music in this country and a string of well-known, younger artistes had done their takes of some of his popular  songs.

They included Castro, Raquel, Koo Ntakara, Kwabena Kwabena, Efya and No Tribe.  King Ayisoba was on stage but did not play any AB Crentsil song.

It was not only the known artistes who rendered AB Crentsil songs on the night. Presidential candidate in the 2012 elections, Hassan Ayariga did a rousing version of Juliana and actor Kofi Adjorlolo was simply great doing the ever-popular Moses. He sang and played his trumpet as well.

Attendance at the Imajin Advertising-organised event  to honour AB Crentsil was fair considering the fact it rained in most parts of Accra in the early evening and there were other major entertainment programmes in the city.

Former President, John Kuffuor was at the event.  He was present at the 2011 LAL Ball where Daddy Lumba was honoured and made it to the celebration of Amakye Dede last year.  When emcee Kwami Sefa Kayi  announced that the Gentle Giant had been to all three LAL Balls, the audience clapped for him.

It was a great opportunity for the featured artistes to do  justice to some of AB Crentsil’s composition. It was a delight to hear the unique touches they all brought to the material of a man they have a lot of respect for.

Raquel, for instance,  did a splendid version of Akpeteshie  while Efya soared high and high into the jazz firmament with I Don’t Know Why. Kwabena displayed his mastery of the highlife medium with Obi Baa Wiase and Castro was spot-on with Aboa Oni Dua.

It was an enjoyable affair for the audience as some of them danced their hearts away, obviously happy  to be present on the night when that giant highlife star was celebrated.

The man himself later took to the stage and performed some of his classic pieces like Angelina, Atea, Papa Samo, Obi Baa Wiase and Adwoa. It was way past 1.00am on Sunday then, but some of the audience still had enough energy left to shake their bodies to his scintillating highlife.

Bassist Dan Grahl and his Shabo Crew  were in good form as the carpet band. They appeared to have rehearsed well with all the artistes they backed.

A number of presentations were made to AB Crentsil as well as his wife on behalf of MTN, Imajin Advertising and the Musicians Union of Ghana.

AB Crentsil  turns 70 next   January and the 2013 MTN Legends and Legacy (LAL) Ball was definitely an  appropriate  pre-birthday gift from Imajin Advertising.

Paulina says: I've just watched segments of our beloved Alfred Benjamin Crentsil aka A. B. Crentsil's MTN's 2013 Legend and Legacy Ball honour via Joy News (ABN Sky 290) -for the umpteenth time and I'm still crying just like our legend.....

Like all Ghanaians, I have loved high-life superstar A. B. Crentsil and his music all my life --and like many I have waited to see this legend honoured -and what a fabulous, fabulous befitting night....he had last Saturday 30th November 2013 at the Accra International Conference Centre.....

I have watched and watched last Saturday night's hot event over and over again, and I just can't get over how fabulous it was, sooo joyous, sooo well organised..our A. B. who has made sooo many people 'happy' with this music -deserves it....

We must appluded MTN, Imajin Advertising -the organisers behind the event, the artistes including Kwabena Kwabena, No Tribe, King Ayisoba and Efya -who I thought was fantastic, and my absolute faves, "Presidential candidate in the 2012 elections, Hassan Ayariga" who sang my father's favourite --Juliana and actor Kofi Adjorlolo who sang Moses another favourite....
