The designer has Ghanaian origins but grew up in California, she studied architecture before coming to fashion, choosing to dress the bodies of many women, speaking their different languages.
Mimi Plange traces in the Namibian Himba and Herero ethnic groups style codes that are woven between a rich tradition and colonial influences that dictated structural changes. The traditional costume has thus become a mix of influences that today quivers with expressive power and that the designer has reworked into a fresh and contemporary language.
"Despite the current global turmoil, the future is continually blooming" she says, while her clothes are animated with floral patterns, intricate embroideries and pastel shades, geometric silhouettes that trace out a strong femininity.
A romantic and sophisticated aesthetic, supported, this season, by a master of style: Manolo Blahnik. The shoe-turier’’s brand and the designer have collaborated in the creation of two deluxe shoe models: a leather sandal with stiletto heel and fringe dedicated to the Himba culture, and open-toe ankle boots filled with beads, a tribute to the modern Victorian Herero style.
“As a young designer, having the good fortune to work with such a prestigious brand like Manolo Blahnik is not only amazing, but a dream come true,” says Mimi Plange.
A dream also fueled by the many celebs that have shown off her designs. Here are a few names: Alicia Keys, Estelle, Janelle Monae, Rihanna, Katerina Graham and Regina King.
