Award-winning film-maker, Akosua Adoma Owusu, has initiated a Kickstarter program to raise funds to save the defunct Rex Cinema in Accra, Ghana. The REX Cinema was built by Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah, who had a vision of creating a Ghanaian cinema industry that could be shared with the world. The REX, located in Accra, is just one of many cinemas built throughout Ghana, and like so many of the others, it’s in trouble.

Even though Ghana’s film industry has been incredibly successful, its early cinemas are on the verge of extinction, and could be sold for redevelopment. The REX Cinema hasn’t been used for the arts for years and is also at risk of being sold.

This project means a lot to Akosua Adoma Owusu and is about preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage. Her vision is to transform the REX into a creative space for art, music and film - where the next generation of Ghanaian filmmakers and artists can showcase their work. With garnered support, her project can help strengthen a cinema-going culture in Ghana.

The saving of the Rex is essential for future generations and I say that we stand beside “AMAA Award-winning filmmaker and director Akosua Adoma Owusu” to bring this national treasure back to life, it will surly add to the growing buzz of Accra….

**Honestly….I’m thinking that the big multi nationals/businesses in Ghana need to step in with funds –or maybe Ghana needs a sort of ‘National Heritage’ body that fights to save these national historical treasures… I’m sooo tired of us destroying the things that make Ghana great……. Also, this story has truly highlighted for me (again) that Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah was a great man, a complex man ---but still a great pioneering man and an innovator who truly wanted to create a great nation for the Ghana’s people….God Rest His Soul..
