Ghanaian Princess: Nana Amoako

[Nana on the right in a beautiful green dress -with her twin]
It’s been some time since Ghana Rising celebrated one of Ghana’s many beautiful Ghanaian Princesses and it’s a joy to introduce you to Nana Amoako. Beautiful, ambitious and fabulously fashionable –Ms Amoako’s a Facebook friend and a future star. The following is an inspirational insight into the life of this special young lady -enjoy.....x

GR: Hello Nana, how are you?
NA: I'm doing great thanks.

GR: Thanks for the interview Nana -what are you up to right-now?
NA: Well at the moment, I work at ulta beauty supply and I’m also in regency beauty institute working -on my cosmetology license.

GR: Wow you’re so focused – what motivated you?
NA: My motivation is the wonderful feeling I get after I see -I’ve done a wonderful job on a client by making her feel as beautiful as ever [whether its new extensions, glamorous makeup, newly waxed eyebrows etc].

GR: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
NA: I see myself on billboards –with my face selling my [own] cosmetics, -and my own salon –with me as the boss. I see a new revolution when it comes to beauty. I see myself on commercials –with everybody wanting me to do their hair and makeup [celebrities, models etc].

GR: I look forward to your make-up line [I love make-up] –and of cause we’ll post it on this blog. Nana what do you do on your days off?
NA: I absolutely love makeup, its my favourite accessory. When I use makeup [on my face] in the morning -its like painting on a blank canvas! On my days off I like to shop, shop, shop -at the mall –it’s my favourite pastime.

GR: You live in Arizona, what’s it like -and does it have a thriving Ghanaian community?
NA: Arizona is very hot [haha]. I would much rather live in California, or New York - somewhere full of life! The Ghanaian community is very little here, in Arizona.

GR: I love your style -how would you describe your look?
NA: My look is very sexy, fashionable and playful. I pay close attention to what’s "in" this season -but I like to put my own twist on the outfits I wear -by putting my own little flair to it. I would call myself a major diva when it comes to my style –I like lots of colour, texture, and sun dresses.

GR: Name your favourite designers?
NA: I love GUESS, can you say FAB!

GR: You are beautiful –tell us your beauty secret?
NA: My beauty secrets consist of exfoliation treatments. I love to use honey and brown sugar on my skin; it gives my face a very youthful glow. Another beauty secret of mine is the cosmetic brand ‘wet and wild mega glow’, it gives my skin a glowing affect and makes my cheek bones stand out.

GR: Who does your hair, your nails and do you go to the gym?
NA: Because I’m a hairstylist -I do my own hair. I’m constantly changing it to different colours [haha, I love to change my look]. I get my nails manicured and pedicured as much as possible at ‘Nails and Spa’. And I dance and do yoga to keep myself lean and trim.

GR: On to more serious stuff, -what are your hopes and dreams for Ghana?
NA: My hopes and dreams for Ghana, this is a great question! I hope to see more beautiful Ghanaian women, reaching for whatever dreams they have, and making it come true. I love anything that has to do with women empowerment and I want to see my strong African sisters do everything to make this world a better place.

GR: Nana thanks for the interview. God bless you and make all your dreams come true. x

Some of Ashanti Ameyaw's favourite things..

There is a picture of Ashanti holding up a t-shirt that says, 'When I'm in the place its party time' and she's so right. Because as you can see from the photographs above, -this social butterfly knows her stuff. Whether she's wearing a cute dress by N'yka Designs, a leggins and vest combo -or an uber glamorous body con dress, -Ashanti is aways 'hot to trot'. A big fan of N'yka Designs, the first three pictures [featuring Ashanti] -are all N'yka Designs by Sheila Boateng. I especially love this cute yellow and green dress.

Kiki Clothing is a new discovery for me. I'm loving this gorgeous multi print dress with a bell sleeve details, -and this oh so cute blue dress. Kiki Clothing is designed by Titi Ademola, -another one of Ashanti's favourite labels- http://www.kikiclothing.com.

Ashanti uses Iman foundation and make-up [a brand that gives flawless coverage] -and their 'IMAN Cream to Powder Foundation' glides onto your skin -like sheer silk to give the coverage of cream combined with a velvety powder finish -and provides a medium to maximum coverage (£23.50). I am also loving this 'IMAN Dressed for Success Makeup Kit' (£19.950).Why not order these Iman products online from, Afrotherapy [it was founded by -hair 'Queen' Harriet Kessie] at: www.afrotherapy.com Like other Ghanaian Glitterati [and myself], Ashanti is also a fan of Nivea -and their NIVEA VISAGE Rich Moisturising Day Cream is a rich, fast absorbing formula that gives dry skin all the moisturising and smoothing elements it needs to maintain its natural balance (http://www.nivea.co.uk).

I love discovering new beauty products and 'Chocho' cream -a product loved by Ashanti and made in Ghana is a 'new-one-on-me'. Touted on 'Chocho Industries' website as; "Quick, dependable and sustainable skin restorer" - this effective herbal skin care product appears to have a cult like following in Ghana. And even though Chocho [a 'national treasure'] is available -nationwide in Ghana, -it can only be bought from big Ghanaian retailers in the UK [like 'AKWAABA SUPERMARKET and TRAVEL & TOURS' shop at: 103 Dalston Lane, Dalston, London E8 1NH -020 7249 2777 / 07903 620 541]. For more information about 'Chocho Herbal Skin Care' products visit: -www.chochoindustries.com

Ghanaian Princess: Love Kyei

"I strongly believe that it is important for those of us, who have been blessed with the opportunity of getting educated and/or living outside of Ghana to take what we have learnt, (in our various areas of expertise), and use that knowledge to help Ghana continue to grow and move in the positive direction that we all want for it. Knowledge is power, and it is our duty to pass that knowledge on to those who need it." Love Kyei

"It is very important for us as women to make time to do things that make us feel good about ourselves and that gives us a boost of confidence, and sometimes, getting your hair done or getting a fresh new style can work wonders. Not only can it change your look, it can also change your attitude. I always make time to do my hair and get my hair done, because I really enjoy it. The beauty of being a black woman is that we can switch it up whenever we like and as often as we like, leaving us feeling like brand new women each and every time."
Love Kyei

Love Kyei is a beautiful and talented Ghanaian sister who lives in Brisbane, Australia. I stumbled across this fabulous and inspirational and passionate lady -via her myspace page, and was inspired. A pianist, and a music and English teacher, -love is not just a pretty face. God fearing, fun and sweet, -Love is very close to her family (they hail from Banko in Kumasi) and can be found sharing jokes with them on her days off. The following is an interview with Love, -and I'm sure you'll agree that she's pretty impressive. Enjoy.......................xx

GR: Hello Love, how are you?
LK: I'm doing really well by God's grace.

GR: Love what are you up to right now?
LK: School has just ended for the term, so I’m on holidays with my family. It’s been a very hectic last couple of weeks, so I’m very grateful for the 2 weeks I have off.

GR: Love, you are a Music teacher and educator -can you elaborate please?
LK: Well music has always been a part of my life. I began singing at the age of 5 with my parents in church and then started piano lessons at the age of 7 until I was 17 years old. During this time I completed piano examinations through AMEB (Australian Music Examination Board), from preparatory to grade 7, (with grade 8 being the last grade). I also competed in musical Eisteddfods where I would sing and/or play the piano, or do musical comedy’s which involved singing and acting. When I first started, I was just singing with my parents, but as time went on, and as my skills improved, I began singing solos in church while accompanying myself on the piano. Lucky for me, I’m able to play by ear so when I hear a song that I like, I go to the piano and start messing around until I know how to play the whole song. If I’m not singing solos though, I’m singing in a group or a choir. By the time I had completed high school, I knew I wanted to do a music degree at university and pursue a music career. My dad, being the wise person that he is though, suggested that I combine music with education. He told me that music on its own wasn’t a guaranteed career where as education was an area where jobs were readily available. So I combined my passion of music with the practicality of education and studied a dual degree of Bachelor of Education/Arts, with a major in Music and a minor in English. This was a 5 year degree, which I started in 2002 and completed in 2006. By the time I had completed though, I had developed a love for fashion and worked managing different retail stores for a little over a year, including managing the first Steve Madden concession store that opened in Brisbane city. In May 2008, I started teaching and have been loving it ever since! I am extremely grateful to my parents for introducing music into my life at such a young age because now I couldn't’t imagine my life without music!

GR: Wow, how exciting?
LK: Yes… I really do enjoy what I do! Knowing that I’m in a position to get students excited about their education and learning is a really big deal to me. We spend 13 years of our lives at school, so I strongly believe that it should be an enjoyable experience. In the time I’ve been teaching, I’ve seen quite a few teachers that don’t make the experience a pleasant one for their students – and it sometimes even makes me uncomfortable as a fellow teacher. I always try to be a positive influence on the students that I teach because students will always remember their teachers from their schooling days – (good or bad), long after they’ve left school. I want to be remembered as that teacher that students looked up to; was a role model; shaped kids to grow up and be responsible adults; and instilled in them the values needed to become model citizens and the leaders of tomorrow. I’m not saying it’s a cruisy job or it’s easy, because for the most part, teaching is very stressful… but at the same time, it’s extremely rewarding.

GR: You are truly blessed -not many people are able to use their creativity to make a living -never mind, enjoy what they do -good for you. Love you work hard -do you play hard?
LK: Well, I love being with my family and friends cause they help me de-stress from all the craziness that can sometimes go on during the week at school. When I’m with them, there is plenty of joking and clowning around, which means laughter is guaranteed and that always makes me happy!

GR: What do you do on your days off?
LK: On my days off, I generally like to just chill at home, watching TV, a movie, or on YouTube- (that site is so addictive…) I’ll also catch up on what’s going on in the world of news and entertainment as well as what’s going on back home in Ghana. If I’m not surfing the Internet though, you’ll find me playing the keyboard, or listening to my favourite gospel music or slow jams.

GR: I love your style –how would you describe your look?
LK: My look is just me… I wear what works for me, looks good on my body and makes me feel comfortable. Sometimes I like to keep it simple while other times I like to be a bit more fun and creative by adding a bold, bright colour, some cute shoes, or different types of accessories. I don’t necessarily follow the trends because not everything that is “fashion” works for my body shape. Being blessed with the Ghanaian curves and living in a country where the stores don’t always cater for women with curves, it can sometimes get frustrating… but nevertheless, I always make it work for me. I’m always comfortable and confident in what I wear; therefore you will always see me rocking it!

GR: Who are your favourite designers?
LK: I actually don’t have a favourite designer and I don’t wear designer clothes, because I can’t justify paying a ridiculous amount of money because of a name or label, or just to “look good. I am very thrifty with my spending, which I have my mum to thank for. I think everyone can look good at a reasonable and affordable price. People always tell me “you always look so good” or “where did you get that from” and I never hesitate to let them know that I got it on sale. At the end of the day, if I’ve saved money, I’m a happy girl! Besides, it’s not about who or what you are wearing, but how you wear it. If you are confident, u can rock anything… designer or off the rack.

GR: You are beautiful -what is your secret?
LK: Thank you… that’s very nice of you. I believe that I have been blessed with good genes, first of all, but I do try to preserve and enhance what I have blessed with. I love dove products – so I start my routine with a combination of the Dove Soap Bar and Gentle Exfoliating Body Wash. I find that the ¼ moisturizing cream their soaps have in them, doesn’t dry out my skin. Then, I literally moisture from head to toe, which I think is the most important part of my beauty routine, and the key to my good skin! I use Dove Body Lotion – Go fresh because I find that my skin retains the moisturiser really well, so it not only remains supple and smooth, but hydrated throughout the whole day! For my daily facial routine, I use Nivea Visage, and do their 3 step cleansing routine, consisting of the Gentle Exfoliating Scrub and Refreshing Facial Wash Gel (which I combine together), the Refreshing Toner, and Oil free Moisturizing Fluid. Once a week, I use Formula 10.0.6 One Smooth Operator Pore Clearing Face Scrub with Zinc+Oat+Pumice. Not only does it smell great, but the beads are a little larger and coarser so it gives me deeper, more intense clean.
I don’t wear alot of makeup, but if I do, I’ll wear Becca Fine Pressed Powder in Cocoa. I absolutely love this product because I don’t have to put a lot of it on to get a nice, sheer coverage, and it matches my skin colour and tone perfectly. I’ll also wear some mascara and gloss up my lips really thick. If I’m going all out though, I’ll’ start with the Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse foundation Cocoa #3 before I apply the Becca and it gives me a flawless, airbrushed type look, while still looking natural. I’ll also play up my eyes by doing a smoky eye look or adding some bold colours.

GR: Who does your hair, your nails and do you go to the gym?
LK: I am very fortunate, because a friend of mine does my hair, when I want to switch it up and get a weave. I basically show her a picture of what I want it to look like and she hooks me up! I usually get tired of the same look after a couple of weeks, so I’m always doing something new and different to my hair. If I am wearing my hair natural though, I do everything myself – including relaxing. (I basically have like a mini hair salon at home, with all the tools and equipment I need to do my hair and maintain it – including a hood dryer...).
I think it is very important for us as women to make time to do things that make us feel good about ourselves and that gives us a boost of confidence, and sometimes, getting your hair done or getting a fresh new style can work wonders. Not only can it change your look, it can also change your attitude. I always make time to do my hair and get my hair done, because I really enjoy it. The beauty of being a black woman is that we can switch it up whenever we like and as often as we like, leaving us feeling like brand new women each and every time!
As for my nails, I do my own manicures and pedicures. Neatly groomed nails are a must for me. Now, I don’t go to the gym, but I do go for a 30 minute walk, Monday to Friday, in the early morning. When I get home from my walk, I do different exercises that target certain body parts, to tone, sculpt and build muscle. I also make sure I remain active throughout my day by walking as much as possible.

GR: On to more serious stuff, -what are your hopes and dreams for Ghana?
LK: I was able to travel to Ghana in December 2007, and what I thought it would be and what it was, gave me a pleasant surprise. As a country, Ghana has come such a long way, especially in terms of the economy, and in the areas of entertainment, sport, fashion, telecommunications, banking, and healthcare. There are so many opportunities available to those who network with the right people and have the passion, drive, determination to go after what it is they want to pursue. As a Ghanaian, I am very proud with the strides that our country is making! On top of all this, I believe Ghana has” the best of both worlds.” There is still a very strong sense of culture and traditions, (the things that make us proud to be Ghanaians), but at the same time, there has also been an incorporation of western influences which makes you feel like you are in any other “westernised” country in the world.
My hopes and dreams for Ghana is that it becomes one of the most prominent countries in Africa and will be recognised by other leading countries around the world. I want it so that when Ghana is mentioned to anyone, they know where it is, and what Ghanaian people are doing to leave their mark in the world, and judging by how it’s going now, it’s definitely is on its way!

I want our economy to continue thriving, and the value of the Ghana cedi to continue to strengthen against other major foreign currencies. I want our government to continue to be an example for other African countries and show the rest of the world that African governments can be run successfully without the corruption and other negative press often associated with African politics. I strongly believe that it is important for those of us, who have been blessed with the opportunity of getting educated and/or living outside of Ghana to take what we have learnt, (in our various areas of expertise), and use that knowledge to help Ghana continue to grow and move in the positive direction that we all want for it. Knowledge is power, and it is our duty to pass that knowledge on to those who need it.

Ghana is such a wonderful place and will always be home to me. I hope to settle in Ghana in the near future and pursue something in the areas of music and education, and give children the opportunity to experience the joy that music can bring to their lives, like it has mine.

GR: Thank you gorgeous lady. God Bless all your dreams.

“I've always been very creative, putting things together and making it work. I don't believe it matters [the price of your clothes] -it's how you rock it” Nana Osei

“My hope is for Ghana to become one of the most prominent, industrialized, -and wealthy countries in Africa. I want everyone in the world to take this country seriously, because it's actually getting there.” Nana Osei

It's always exciting to stumble across a Ghanaian sister -who is inspirational, beautiful, full of life; ambitious and happy. Nana Osei is such a person, -and we have managed to get an interview with this busy bee. The following is an inspirational insight into the life of our fabulous Ghanaian Princess -and I am sure you'll agree, -when I say that Nana is pretty special. Enjoy.....

GR: Hello Nana, how are you?
NO: I'm doing well. I can't complain at all. I'm blessed and Highly favoured

GR: It's so lovely to finally catch up with you Nana. What are you up to?
NO: Well I've just been working and trying to get into a little bit of everything. I performed this past Saturday, at The Move to Groove Ball Hip Hop show case -and that was a lot of fun. My group and I performed a dance by upcoming choreographer, Connor Shepard. I plan on moving to L.A. by August to pursue my dreams -so I'm definitely saving money for that, because I heard it's not cheap lol

GR: Nana you are a dancer, and have four years in a dance company -tell us more?
NO: I've been dancing since I was two. I began with the Adowa in Ghana but I never had any professional training -it came naturally ( if I can say so myself). I got involved when I began college at the University of North Texas [where I was one of the first members of Basic Rhythm dance Co]. We danced mostly Hip Hop, but stylized in jazz and contemporary. I was involved in the Dance Company for all four years, during college, -as assistant choreographer. We had annual showcases and won our school's competition every homecoming, called "yell Like Hell". Dancing is truly one of my passions. One of the best moments was when we opened for the one and only, Pattie La Belle, where I had the honour to choreograph a piece to her song, -it was a lot of fun. The great thing about the dance group is that it is still 'on and going' - at the University. I'm proud to say I started something like that.

GR: Wow Pattie La Belle -anyway you are also a model tell us more?
NO: I tell everyone -I don't consider myself a model because I've never been paid for it lol. But seriously, -I began about a year ago. I never really looked at myself and considered modelling because I felt I was too short, -amongst other things. My sister always wanted too but then people started telling me that I should try it [I have that look] -so I said to myself, -why not. I've worked only with Photographer, Will Washington of Extreme Works Studio, who I've known for about 2 years now. I do a lot of portfolio updates and promotions for him. I wouldn't mind doing high fashion because I usually get contacted for music videos, or King magazine type of shoots, and that's not what I'm trying to do now. I've also had experience behind the scenes. I coordinated a fashion show for, UASA -an African organization I was apart of at the University. We raised over $800 for AIDS awareness [for] that event. I was Head Coordinator and had to get the venue, models and promotions. It was a success.

GR: What projects are you working on at present?
NO: At this moment I'm just trying to get into other things -such as auditions for upcoming plays and building up my resume. The most prominent project, I'm focusing on is a fashion show featuring myself and my designs [sometime this year]. It is sponsored by, 'Impact Today' -an organization founded by my cousin, Thelma Osei, -it empowers our youth. We are also working with my other cousin [another] designer, Malik Ohene Awuah -featuring his line 'Overachievers' -[a shout out to him] -check out his website at: www.iamoverachiever.com it's all for a good cause. But I hope to get my designs out there. It incorporates all types of African styles -with quality fabrics, - to make it fun and modern. It will be hot, so I will definitely keep you posted and once I do a photoshoot with the clothes, hopefully you will allow me to post it on your blog...

GR: We look forward to your designs and of cause -we will post it on the blog. Nana what do you do on your days off?
NO: Girl, sleep, sleep...lol. No, I usually just run last minute errands and just relax because, -I work 10 hour days, so I look forward to relaxing when I'm off. You know, I hang with friends but sometimes -I do have to work on my projects [such as my fashion designs] or go to auditions.

GR: I love your style -how would you describe your look?
NO: Hmm I would say 'only Nana' lol. Seriously, with anything that I do [with my hair and clothes] is different. I would like to think of myself as a trendsetter. When I step out people usually say, "only Nana could pull that off". I just like to think outside of the box. I've always been very creative, putting things together and making it work. I don't believe it matters [the price of your clothes] -it's how you rock it. Wear it with confidence and you can't go wrong. My style is fun, flirty, creative, hot and edgy at times, but all the same, -it's me.

GR: Who are your favourite designers?
NO: This is so sad but I really don't have a favourite designer. To tell you the truth -I don't really rock designer gear. I'm frugal and a bargain shopper [you feel me lol]. I always go in stores -and go straight to the clearance section -and make things work for me. My favourite stores to shop are; Bebe, XXI,Wet Seal, Frenzi, Bloom and [I have to say this but] Ross lol. They have a lot of cute dresses for great prices, -and you can't go wrong with vintage stores, -just mix and match with some new pieces -and make it work.

GR: You are beautiful -what is your secret?
NO: No stress, genes and love [ from your family] lol. My mom always taught me to moisturise I wash my face every night and every morning. As far as make-up is concerned, -I usually don't wear make-up unless I'm going out -then I use studio Fix by MAC and some lip gloss. I think every girl [if nothing else] needs to have lip gloss -you can never go wrong. But the natural look is me [for the most part] because [believe it or not] guys actually like that.

GR: Who does your hair, your nails and do you go to the gym?
NO: I actually do my own hair. I usually do quick weaves or make my own wigs. I do have a good length of hair, but I just get bored easily and like different looks. As far as working out, - I try to every two days or at least once a week. I hate working out but I love playing sports -such as; basketball, rock climbing and swimming. As a Ghanaian you know we have to keep in shape with all the rice, banku and fufu we eat lol. But yes, -I think it's defiantly good to keep a healthy regiment...

GR: On to more serious stuff, -what are your hopes and dreams for Ghana?
NO: I finally went back to Ghana after 17 years. I was born in the states but raised in Ghana until I was 5. I went for Christmas and I loved it. Ghana is amazing and the economy is booming right now. There are so many opportunities back home with business, real estate and especially with entertainment (which is my focus). I had the opportunity to be on the radio at VIBE FM, go to the TV stations -GTV and TV3, to do some productions. I even got the chance to be the back up dancer for artist Tic Tac at the MTN concert during the African World Cup for his hit song "Kangaroo" that was so much fun. I never knew how much fun Ghana could be. My hope is for Ghana to become one of the most prominent, industrialized, -and wealthy countries in Africa. I want everyone in the world to take this country seriously, because it's actually getting there. When I was there last year December, -the Cedis was more that U.S. dollars! I want to inspire other Africans and Ghanaians to take what they have gotten from America [by utilizing it's resources] and bring it back home to make our country even better than it is. I plan to retire there when I get older but I would like to establish myself here first. Ghana is a beautiful country which I call home, I hope to make my country proud with my endeavours. For all the others [countries] don't sleep on Ghana, because were coming!

Thank you beautiful, we look forward to your designs. God Bless all your dreams.....xx
