Justice in Ghana: Will Pastor Marvin Brown, also known as ‘Prince Mark’, leader of the New Jerusalem Religion at Tema Community 4 be prosecuted for rape and manslaughter or will he walk like other sooooooooo called ‘men of God’?

Paulina says: I remember years ago when I used to go to a predominantly Ghanaian church based in Edmonton north London –which has now moved to a bigger venue in Wood Green also in north London -there was a man of about 36/37 who was always driving around with a young boy whose single mother was an elder in the church…

It was odd to me and a friend that a grown man would want to hang around with a young boy but as his mother seemed Ok with it –who was I or my social worker friend to question it.

Years later it came out (very loud and clear) that the man had been grooming and raping the young boy and was now banished from the church…

I don’t know if the church and pastor pushed for the man in question to be prosecuted …only that the mother and son left the church –and the perpetrator was never seen again ---

I pray that perpetrator isn’t slivering around another church surrounded by parents who are ever trusting, some sooooo tired from working three jobs plus a cleaning job (as and when they are needed)  –and are sooooo happy to be rid of their children –that they don’t take time to know the adults in question!!!

I’m not saying the mother in this story was to blame –but who allows their nine year old, ten year old, eleven year son or daughter to hang around with a grown arse man unsupervised -someone who isn’t a family member or a friend –basically someone you don’t really know?

I’m sooooo sick and tired of this level of ignorance and neglect by trusting parents. Why is it that some of us are watching our children like a hawk and others are soooo quick to trust strangers with their precious children? Is it poverty? Do they live in a safer world than I do or have I got it wrong?

Another situation that really gets my goat are all those images of children running around the streets of Ghana –all those children who are crying out for attention and affection because their poor parents leave them behind at home, or in the compound or on the streets sooo that they can go and make a living!!!!

These children might have an elderly grandparent or even an elderly neighbour keeping an eye on them –but most are soooo vulnerable to beasts and paedophiles –and as Ghana’s courts are corrupt and lawyers can be bought –even if these children are abused the perpetrators –get away with it….

Anyway I’ve gone on for long enough but parents please note ……not all people in churches are of God and if a grown up befriends your child –dig deeper –is it innocent and normal or do they have an ulterior motive???

I’m feeling very angry and emotional about this subject because Ghana is gripped by another child abuse case –and if past records are anything to go by then this demon-possessed perpetrator might walk… other 'one touch' this and that –have!!!!

In fact if this sooooooooooooo called pastor isn’t done for rape –and manslaughter for infecting the young man with HIV then Ghana’s Law is an arse….

I’m sickened by the following story which I feel is tooooo graphic to be posted on here. Please read about the story gripping Ghana via: http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/artikel.php?ID=281569

p.s ….Note ....Ghana’s lawmakers –the world is watching you –watching to see if the children of Ghana are valued or not!!!!!

Eye woa ( it is you)
The Lord has arisen

He is searching to and fro the earth
Seeking someone to bless
Believe it is you
This is a time of deliverance

The great God has arisen
He's got the power to heal
Looking to endow someone with His healing power
Believe that it is you

The Great one has arisen
His hands are full of grace and blessings
He's got the power to change my destiny
This is the time of deliverance
This is my time of deliverance

Paulina Opoku-Gyimah says: There’s something special about the designs by new Ghana based fashion label Oplus Mavazi Ltd also known as O.M.L.

They have a lovely collection of pretty dresses but I’m predicting big things for their lovely shorts.

They have designed some of the most fabulous shorts I’ve seen in a long time for both men and women called native and they can be purchased via: www.oplusmavazi.bigcartel.com  --

I don’t know much about this label but I’m excited and will be keeping a Ghana Rising Blog eye on them and hope to see them at this year’s much-anticipated Ghana Fashion & Design Week –maybe at the exhibition….

***I must say that there are a lot of details about the above pictures that I like. I love that O.M.L have added their logo, text and contact details –its soo important to have your branding down tight…

There is also something innately stylish about O.M.L. and that stylish thing can’t be faked but can be learnt –if one has the mind to learn –unfortunately many don’t. But I dooo have a little bit of advice for this young design team –they need to pay attention to detail.

They must be very careful to only use real models. If they are selling shorts –the models must have the right build and legs to carry the shorts in question.

Perfectly shot shorts on models fits like a dream -with a little leg-room and not bunched up around the middle. You never want the shorts to look tight.

Also –Ghanaian photographers are starting understand photoshop –and there is at least two photographers that are now willing to give their clients magazine /advertising ready images that have been airbrushed and retouched –taking away blemishes, large pores and cellulite and all those things that make an image more pedestrian and less high-end and glossy.

It’s really all about attention-to-detail once you have your lovely designs –and I’ve only bothered to advice O.M.L because I think they are already fab –and can really fly…

For more info or to purchase any of the above designs by new fashion label Oplus Mavazi also known as O.M.L. visit their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/OplusMavazi

Paulina Opoku-Gyimah says: I’m going to be very honest ….I don’t really understand what is going on right now in the world of poli-tricks in Ghana –only that errrmmmm things are coming to a head and there can only be three outcomes…

One ----Ghana’s democratically elected  President John Dramani Mahama remains president...

Two ---- Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo becomes president

Three –--there is a re-run where the results will depend very much on the Ghana’s peoplessssssssssssssss –which……funny enough is how we got into this errrrmmmm poli-trickily -Kwaku-Anansi situation in the first place …do you follow? I don’t!!!!

Anywayssssssssss, what I do understand is that like most Ghanaians and the late great Audrey Hepburn –I now believe in Pink!!!! Yep….. I have a new found love of ‘pink papers’!!!

Honestly………… we Ghanaians are sooooooooooo stylish… what other nation writes their ‘truths’ (mercy) on poli-trickal pink paper?

Thus, I’m predicting that the next big thing in the world is ‘pink paper’. In fact I’m predicating that in the future you won’t be able to do business in Ghana without first producing your pink paper.

I’m thinking …..elegant pink writing paper with maybe customise details ike the one with the lotus design above from Zazzle –it costs from as little as £0.75 per sheet will be all the rage!!!  But take it from me -nothing compares to pink papers from Smythson!!!!

The good people at Smythson of Bond street who have been established since 1887 offer a host of services including a fabulous posh personalised stationery service where you can have your title, name, monogram and address (and logo) if you please -----added for good measure to your delectable pink (Marston Thick) writing paper and envelopes et al.

Or why not opt for Smythson's plain Park Avenue Pink Kings Writing Paper which costs from as little as £10.00 per box…

Please note, Smythson’s customised “writing paper prices start from £195. Borders, motifs and tissue lining all come at additional costs”. –And then you can like me  ----spray said paper with your favourite perfume ----for me it’s all about Robert Piguet's Fracas eau de parfum available from Selfridges –with prices starting from £95.00 –then you can get writing –remember it must be the truth –because only the truth (Ghana styleeeeee) will do when it comes to pink paper!!!  Don’t forget to post me a thank you letter or note (remember  this must also be on pink paper) like posh people do (laughter)…..

You can read all about Ghana’s fascination with pink paper and much more via the Modern Ghana website at: http://www.modernghana.com/news/479504/1/constitution-does-not-call-for-invalidation-of-uns.html

To order your customised personalised pink paper from Smythson visit: http://www.smythson.com/

And if after much consideration you also decide to spray your must-have pink papers with perfume –why noy do like me and invest in a Robert Piguet's Fracas eau de parfum from sales rep, Samantha Coker in Selfridges or visit their website at: http://www.selfridges.com/en/Beauty/Categories/Shop-Fragrance/Womens-Fragrance/Eau-de-parfum/Fracas-eau-de-parfum

Paulina Opoku-Gyimah says: Jet-setters, the travel & tourism industry -especially hoteliers all know travel guru  TripAdvisor -the world’s number one travel site and the-go-to hub for all things reviews  and relevant in the world of hospitality –can make or break your business.

So powerful is TripAdvisor that most don’t travel without visiting this site –and certainly many will not book a hotel room -especially in emerging markets like Ghana –without reading the reviews on sais site. Let’s be honest, if you’re going on an uber important three day business trip to Accra, Ghana –the last thing you want disturbing you is a stinking small room full of flies –and dirty poly-cotton bed sheets…

Therefore the reviews on TripAdvisor be they about hotels, restaurants, spas or whatever –matter and the above represent the top ten best ranked hotels in Ghana –today on the TripAdvisor website.

I’m going to be brutally honest…..a couple (just a couple) of the hotels in the tripAdvisor Ghana top ten would never be normally written about on Ghana Rising blog –I just don’t find them aspirational enough…. plus I’m uber surprised by the absence of Holiday Inn Accra Airport (ranked 13th) , with its parquet flooring and its rooftop swimming pool fabulousness – Golden Tulip Accra (ranked 25th) and The Aknac Hotel, Accra –with is ranked 4 of 114 of Ghana’s Bed & Breakfast (???)…

Note TripAdvisor matters because the above much feted hotels have been voted by those who count -ordinary travellers –and what they say goes. Plus things are about to get more interesting --- TripAdvisor is about to launch its 2013 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winners.  I wonder, will any of Ghana’s hotels or restaurants be amongst this much anticipated industry award and recognition?

Number 4 --82%
The Aknac Hotel - Ranked 4 of 114

I really don’t know why it’s been classed as a B&B when it’s a quality luxury boutique hotel. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotels-g293797-c2-Accra_Greater_Accra-Hotels.html

Children & Wellbeing: The Complex Poli-tricks of Orphanages …….finally coming to light

A recent report revealed that over 90 per cent of children in orphanages in Ghana are not actually orphans

Title: Orphanage volunteering 'part of the problem'

A company that specialises in responsible tourism has said it will no longer offer orphanage volunteering trips.

Responsibletravel.com, an umbrella group for ethically minded tour operators and hoteliers, dropped 10 itineraries from its books due to ethical reasons.

Its move comes ahead of A-Level results day (September 15), when many school leavers begin planning their gap year. The firm said it would work with industry leaders to establish a set of "best practice guidelines" for the sector before considering reinstating the trips.

Sarah Bareham, the firm's marketing assistant, explains:

"We are concerned that orphanage volunteers, despite their best intentions, are part of the problem rather than the solution for children living in poverty throughout the world," she said.

"Instead of family-based support, orphanage care too often becomes the first solution for volunteers and NGOs unaware of other alternatives.

There is overwhelming evidence from UNICEF documenting the detrimental effect orphanages have on children’s physical and emotional wellbeing.

Alongside a boom in tourism, the number of orphanages in Bali has doubled in the last 20 years, suggesting well-meaning volunteers are actually fuelling the demand. Siem Reap, Cambodia, gateway to Angkor Wat and a town with a population of only 100,000, now has 35 orphanages.

Particularly shocking are reports that one parades its children through the town at night, with placards saying 'help our orphans' as visitors drink and dine.

"Although many orphanages are genuine places of care, others have less humanitarian motives at heart.

A UN report from West Africa identifies the need to protect children from “Orphan Dealers”, highlighting that over 90 per cent of children in orphanages in Ghana are not actually orphans and 140 of 148 orphanages in the country operate without license.

In Cambodia almost all orphanages are funded by overseas donors. Many turn to volunteer tourism for income and train their children to perform and attract donors. Disturbingly, three-quarters of children in these institutions are not orphans. In Bali a BBC report uncovered that “tourists’ donations keep the orphanages going – but some are effectively rackets, exploiting children and holidaymakers alike”.

"For children in even the most legitimate institutions, interaction with a revolving door of short-term volunteers can be psychologically very damaging.

Volunteers are largely untrained, do not possess the complex skills necessary to work with traumatised children and would not be allowed to do so in the UK. Most volunteers also seek to form an emotional attachment to the children in their care, to feel they have made a difference through their work. Instead they are often simply reinforcing a never-ending cycle of abandonment.

"Consequently, Responsibletravel.com has taken the step to remove orphanage volunteering trips from our site while we work with industry leaders and experts to put together criteria to ensure best practice in child-focused voluntourism."

Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/10209598/Orphanage-volunteering-part-of-the-problem.html

Paulina says: I truly don’t know where to start…… but I’m thankful that the complex poli-tricking of orphanages are slowly but surely coming to light.

That 90% of children in orphanages in Ghana aren’t orphans isn’t shocking but sad and complicated!!! Thus, I want organisations, the ones who send voluntaries to Ghana and beyond to try and still work with these sooo called orphanages as ultimately the children will be the ones to suffer.

For many of Ghana’s poor –orphanages are the only way to feed their children  -and for some of the children involved, it’s the only place where they get real attention, affection and some education –so I urge the likes of ‘Responsible Travel (http://www.responsibletravel.com/) not to pull out of Ghana completely, but to please work with these sooo called orphanages –so that the children involved still get the care and attention these sooo called orphanages afford them.

I don’t know if some NGO’s in Ghana are confusing feeding/day-care centres with orphanages or in their errrmmmm pursuit to garner maximum amount of impact and money –they are willing to play the orphan card and use poor children for their gains –whatever it is, the most vulnerable, the poor and their children will be the ones being exploited and hurt.

Hair & Beauty: Kukis Parlour Osu, Accra Ghana

Kukis Parlour at a fashion shoot…

Kukis Parlour do elegant wedding hair…

“We customize every clients hair, and there are varieties of hairs as well, so why don't you make time to pass by the shop, for a one on one chat with the creative director.” Kukis Parlour

Natural looking soft curly hair...

“Excellent customer service and customer delight, is our objective. At Kukis, we understand how you value your physical look hence we don't compromise.” Kukis Parlour

All wags will love this party hairstyle….

Beautiful socialite Victoria Michaels looking fab and glossy....

This hairstyle is sooo well done that I don’t know whether it’s the subjects own hair or it’s a wrap. It’s amazing really because I don’t normally like wrapped hairstyles as they tend to look hard like helmets but this style is lovely, looks clean and glossy and suits this beautiful girl.. All that’s missing is the right shade of foundation –and she’s good to go.

Paulina Opoku-Gyimah says: If like me you never thought in the month of Sundays that songstress Eazzy and Ghana Rising fave, uber groomed to within an inch of her life, fab socialite, –mega beauty Menaye Donkor-Muntari could have anything in common –you will be surprised to find out that they do!!!  –They have a hair salon in common – and it’s Kukis Parlour in Accra’s very own West-End ---Osu!!!

I’m going to be brutally honest –it’s not every hairstyle that comes of this salon that I like –I can’t stand ghetto looking hair or over OTT wiggy looking hair --but as we all know –hairstylists are there to give their clients what they want –and it’s not always –high fashion!!!

But, and it’s a big but –when Kukis Parlour do their thing the results are breathtakingly fabulous as the above photos attest.

Situated in Kuuku Hill, Sunkwa road, opposite the fly city link office in Osu, Accra Ghana – Kukis Parlour is a firm favourite of Accra’s young socialites including the very beautiful Victoria Michaels –who probably has the loveliest eyebrows in Ghana, and celebrities about town.

Please note, apart from hair Kukis Parlour also offers a host of beauty treats including: bridal make up, manicure, pedicure, massages, waxing, eye-lashing, piercing and much more. For more info visit: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kukis-Palour/116029141814357
