Paulina Opoku-Gyimah says: it’s taken some years but I’m finally beginning to see a trend for quality services/spas/lodges etc springing up not just in the ubiquitous Accra metropolis but in other cities/towns in Ghana and I love it.

And the town in question is the “quaint original Obo Township” in the Kwahu district…and the business/services is Ghana’s latest must-visit holiday spot – Jays Lodge.

I’m soo excited about Jays Lodge which is just two and half hours from Accra --not least because I get to talk about a fabulous venue outside of Accra –but also because I get to kill two birds with one stone, –I can visit my family home in Mpraeso and then head to the lodge…

Jays Lodge which opened for business on the 28th June 2013 is already a hit with Ghanaians and is beginning to make a splash in the international travel industry.

Jays Lodge is conveniently situated in Ghana’s adventure capital –offering thrill seekers all manner of fun including: paragliding, hiking, cycling, bird watching and Fishing et al. Culture vultures can take in some of Kwahu’s amazing heritage sites including, “the scenic tropical rainforest across the “Asaaka bend” though Tafo and observe the canopies gradually give way to savannah and then the breath-taking stretch of the Volta Lake across the horizon – all within 30–minute drive from JAYS Lodge.”

Ghanaian Women on Top: Chief Justice Mabel Yamoa Agyemang

Newly appointed Gambia Chief Justice Mabel Yamoa Agyemang

Title: Gambia: President Yahya Jammeh Appoints Ghanaian Lady As Chief Justice

The Gambian presidency has announced that President Yahya Jammeh, acting under the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic and in consultation with the Judicial Service Commission, has decided to remove Justice Wowo from his position as the Chief Justice.

Justice Wowo, according to the presidency, is now replaced by Justice Mabel Yamoa Agyemang. A Ghanaian national, Justice Agyemeng is an expert Appeal Court judge from the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Since she was called to the Ghanaian Bar in 1987 and the Ghanaian Bench soon after, she has served in the judiciaries of the governments of Ghana, The Gambia and Swaziland.

She began working for the Commonwealth Secretariat in 2004, first being sent to The Gambia where she spent four years as a High Court judge, and then to Swaziland in a similar capacity.

She was appointed to the High Court of Swaziland in October 2008 for a two-year assignment to help strengthen the judiciary and deliver fast, expert judgments on cases. Her previous assignment, to The Gambia from September 2004 to 2008, saw her sitting as a High Court judge.

Here she was so successful that the Justice Ministry asked her to serve for an additional year in the country’s Court of Appeal.

However, she declined the offer in favour of an assignment in Swaziland, so that she could further broaden her experience. According to records, Justice Mabel Agyemang, who served in the land and civil division, Commercial division and Criminal division completed about 365 files during her four-year tenure in The Gambia as a High Court judge.

Prior to her appointment s Chief Justice of The Gambia, Justice Agyemang was serving as a member of the Gambia Court of Appeal.

Title: Ghana Lures Bids of $2.2 Billion as Demand Doubles Debt Offered

Demand for Ghana’s bid to raise $1 billion on international capital markets amounted to more than twice that of the debt offered, according to Citigroup Inc., which helped arrange issuance.

The order book amounted to about $2.2 billion, Nicholas Samara, the London-based vice president of Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, at Citigroup, said by phone today. The government issued $750 million of 10-year notes at 7.875 percent and will next Friday exchange an additional $250 million of the bonds for existing debt maturing October 2017, Sam Mensah, a consultant for Ghana’s Finance Ministry, said by phone from New York.

“This financing is strategically put in place to support the country to continue its trajectory of economic growth,” Citigroup’s Samara said. The coupon rate compares with 6.63 percent in Nigeria’s sale of 10-year bonds on July 2 and 6.875 percent Rwanda got in an April issue.

The bond sale in the world’s second-biggest cocoa producer took place as African nations tap appetite for assets from the world’s fastest-growing region after developing Asia. Like Rwanda, Ghana is rated five steps below investment grade at B by Standard & Poor’s, compared with BB- for Nigeria, which is three steps away. Ghana, which became the first sub-Saharan African nation outside South Africa to sell Eurobonds in September 2007, forecasts an expansion of 8 percent this year in the $41 billion economy.

Budget Deficit

The 2023 bond will be listed on Ghana Stock Exchange (GGSECI) and the Irish Stock Exchange, making it the first Eurobond to be listed on a local market in sub-Saharan Africa, outside of South Africa, the ministry said in a statement on its website. The funds will also be used for capital projects approved in the 2013 budget and refinancing the 2017 debt to lower its cost of borrowing, it said.

Yields on the $750 million 2017 debt fell two basis points, or 0.02 percentage point, to 5.95 percent as of 1:01 p.m. in London. The yields have jumped 108 basis points this year, compared with a 122 basis-point increase in emerging-market bonds, JPMorgan Chase & Co. data show.

Ghana’s budget deficit jumped to 12.1 percent of gross domestic product in 2012 from 4.3 percent the previous year as the government boosted salaries for civil servants. The Finance Ministry is forecasting the gap will narrow to 9 percent this year. In the first four months of 2013, the shortfall was 3.8 percent of GDP, compared with a forecast of 3 percent, the central bank said in May.

Business/Telecommunications: Surfline Communications Ltd & Alcatel-Lucent join forces to launch new network in Ghana -set for 2014.....

Title: LTE network launch for Ghana in Q1 2014

Ghana is planned to get an LTE network thanks to a partnership agreement between Ghanaian company Surfline Communications Limited and telecommunications giant Alcatel-Lucent.

The announcement has been made at the LTE Africa 2013 event being held in Cape Town, South Africa.According to Surfline chief executive officer Dr. Yaw Akoto, the Ghanaian LTE network is expected to be the first commercial deployment of LTE technology.“We are expecting that this deployment will meet the increasing demand for data services, the focus will primarily be data and not voice,” said Dr. Yaw Akoto.

Meanwhile, wholly Ghanaian owned company, Surfline aims to roll out the first phase of the network by the end of the first quarter in 2014.Surfline’s business model will, at the start, be aimed at the high-end of the consumer market as well as the growing small and medium enterprise market in Ghana. Initial coverage will be in the capital city of Accra and be followed by further roll-out into the major metropolitan areas and finally the country at large.“We are happy and proud to be partnering with Surfline.

Over the past while Alcatel-Lucent has been refining our strategies and we have developed a very strong company focus on what we call ultra-broadband and this partnership with Surfline exactly fits in with this core focus of providing this ultra-broadband,” explained Daniel Jaeger, vice-president of Alcatel-Lucent Africa “Africa represents a major opportunity for growth in ultra-broadband, and it is a significant part of our strategy to form strategic partnerships with operators like Surfline, who are committed to making a positive contribution to people’s lives,” continued Jaeger.

This is a so-called greenfield operation and so the partnership agreement will see Alcatel-Lucent provide hardware and software, along with installation, optimisation, maintenance and managed services.

“We chose Alcatel-Lucent to build and operate our LTE network because of the strong trust and relationship we developed – and the experience that Alcatel-Lucent has on LTE as a technology, as well as its strong presence in Africa, including Ghana,” explained John Taylor, executive chairman, Surfline.

The new IP architecture-based network will give Surfline the ability to quickly and economically expand mobile broadband capacity as customer demand grows.

The 4G LTE network will provide Surfline customers access to social networking sites, internet browsing, e-mail, online gaming, streamed videos and video calling with dramatically increased performance.

“LTE Lends itself to many things, there is a lot of room to add more value. The business is there in Ghana but they cannot expand because of the lack of networks.

We are looking at that because we need to make a big difference to the growth of the business sector in Ghana,” said Dr. Akoto.

Akoto and Surfline believe the Ghanaian market has matured beyond the products and services currently available with specific emphasis in the data sector.

As a data-centric communications provider Surfline will work to address national requirements for broadband connectivity that will greatly contribute to Ghana’s social and economic growth.

Big Brother Africa’s Latest News: Nando is disqualified and Elikem gets a strike.......

Title: Breaking News: Nando Disqualified-Elikem gets a Strike

Tanzania's Nando has been Disqualified from the Big Brother House.

After tonight's Evictions that saw Annabel and Sulu being given the boot, Big Brother then gathered all of the Housemates in the living room.

Today Big Brother reproached Nando for the fight that he had with Elikem on Friday. The heated face-off with Elikem saw the two fellas exchanging fiery words between them. Nando is the one that instigated the fight. Instigation and provocation is a violation of the Big Brother rules.

"Any Housemate who becomes physically violent will be removed from the House immediately. Violence can refer to self-inflicted violence, or violence towards another. Violence includes provocation, goading, bullying and victimisation," said Biggie.

This season Big Brother has imposed a Three Strike Rule, which will be applicable to Housemates who commit serious infringements. For this fight Nando received his second Strike and Elikem was served with his first Strike. Afterwards the Tanzanian was called into the Diary Room. He was given his third Strike for making threats against Elikem's life, saying: "I feel like stabbing him. A nigga like that deserves to die".

And he was also caught sleeping with scissors under his bed and this is not the first time that he has been caught with a weapon in the House. The troubled young fellow has had a dramatic nine weeks in The Chase. Last month he was served with a a Strike and a stern warning from Big Brother after he was found carrying a knife to the Channel O Party. The possession of weapons or intention to be violent in the House is another violation of the Big Brother rules.

After the Diary session Nando was told to immediately exit the House. Big Brother then gave a warning to the Housemates to conduct themselves as adults.

Paulina says: Omgoodness I wasn’t expecting this but I’m glad Big Brother Africa made a decision to do ‘something’ with regards to young Nando’s behaviour as he been acting somewhat erratic…

I’m hoping they also offer Nando some sort of counselling/support –because it might just be a game to some ---but were talking about a young man’s life… This is sooooo sad, wishing young Nando all the best for the future.

Art/Film: David LaChapelle & Reiner Opoku - Reinventing Yourself

“Reiner Opoku is an international curator and contemporary art dealer who began working with artists in the early ’80s. He has seen firsthand how artists make the world a more vibrant and innovative place, and in that spirit, introduces The Avant/Garde Diaries to artist David LaChapelle. David’s work is widely recognizable with its loud colors, exposed skin, glittering bling, and phantasmagoric blend of fact and fiction. His glossy, ostentatious portraits of pop culture icons such as Madonna, Amanda Lepore, Lady Gaga, and Michael Jackson helped define his signature style.”

Big Brother News: Hip Hip Hooray …Ghana’s Elikem survives what is probably the hardest Eviction –yet…

Paulina Opoku-Gyimah says: Omgoodness …I was hoping but wasn’t expecting this outcome!!! I and most of Africa and beyond are soooooo happy that Ghana’s last representative –actor/tailor Elikem has been saved from tonight’s crazy evictions, mainly because Big Brother Africa always seems sooooo biased towards Ghanaians. Anyway I want our Elikem to win but …..with its poli-tricks I just don’t know ---but what I am certain of is that nobody wants Tanzania’s Feza or Botswana’s Oneal. The aforementioned are lovers in the Big Brother Africa house –and have over the past month started to show their true feelings towards the rest of the housemates –and it’s not good.

I find Feza new stance baffling especially her brewing hatred for our Elikem –someone she was once very close to. Also it seems Oneal who I thought was just very serious and a principled young man has changed drastically. He is now somewhat bitter, has real hatred for our Elikem and apparently hates ‘West Africans’ –which isn’t going down well with Africans especially West Africans in watching land.

Another thing that is troubling this the fact that Feza seems to have a very negative hold over her fellow countrymen Nando –who is hell-bent on upsetting our Elikem …I just don’t know what’s going on with him.

All-in-all I’m pleased that our Elikem is safe for another week, –plus he has a head-to-head coming up against Botswana’s Oneal tomorrow –which seems to have watchers in watching land gripped…. But apart from that, I’m uber sad that Big Brother Africa lost the very funny and much loved Zambian Housemate Sulu,… I really wished that only Annabel went today but it’s how the cookie crumbled…. I see big things for Sulu and wish him every success.

A big thank you to the following countries for voting for Elikem….

Ghana: Elikem
Ethiopia: Elikem
Nigeria: Elikem
Sierra Leone: Elikem
Zimbabwe: Elikem
Rest of Africa: Elikem
