Don't miss out on the fashion shows visit:
Paulina Opoku-Gyimah says: As you all know I’ve been championing
Ghana Fashion & Design Week since its fabulous launch last year –and this year
is no different!!
At the very top of its game –team GFDW have paid their
dues and it shows in their precision work ethics, excellent style and eye for
detail, fabulous designers, fantastic exhibition and the way they execute their
plans. But it wasn’t easy –Ghana’s fashion industry is just taking off
after all…
Also, it was such a shame that Ghana based media didn’t
pay this monumental event the respect due –or cover it the way it should
have.
In fact it took the likes of publication du jour --Vogue
Italia, Marie Claire S.A, the Guardian Newspaper UK, top international bloggers
and New African Woman to cover the event before Ghana’s media cottoned on –why?
As for sponsorship –it was evident that Ghanaian owned
businesses bar Sacha Okoh’s SO Aesthetic, unlike big luxury brands including
Moet and Chandon, Virgin Atlantic, Blackberry and Porsche –didn’t understand
how huge this event was –or just what it was doing for Ghana –globally.
I was surprised the various high-commissions based in
Accra and Ghana’s very own Tourist Board or Authority or what have you didn’t
feel the need to come on board in some way, because what Ghana fashion and
design week has achieved in a year -Ghana’s tourist Board has failed to do
since its inception –what a shame.
I have the upmost respect for Ghana Fashion & Design
Week’s founders, Ohemaa Shadders (http://www.shaddersafrica.com/) and Daryl
Rita Osekreh, –they have the talent, connections and dare I say it –the
patience to make Ghana’s fashion industry great and we must celebrate them and
support them.
My prayers this year –yep GFDW is fast approaching, is
that Ghana’s growing fashion icons, celebrities, its ladies-who-lunch, its it
girls, socialites and ‘first ladies’ will grace this event and the front-row, that
local and international retail buyers will be aplenty and the various collections will be
bought by high-end boutiques from around the world. But mostly, that Ghana’s industry movers and shakers
will get behind this fabulous, professional must-event; be it financially,
support or promotion and help GFDW to continue to shine –and put Ghana on the
map.
We can no longer be content to be ‘bush’ people. We must
accept Ghana is a member of the Global Village –and the world is watching and
fashion is a multi billion dollar industry that sustains millions. Anyway, how
fabulous are the big international brands sponsoring or collaborating with
GFDW? Remember Ghana fashion & Design Week is taking place between 11th
-13th October 2013 at the Movenpick Hotel Accra and tickets are
