Paulina says: I only heard about this fabulous band after
their much feted stint at this year’s Womad festival and I’m wondering why I haven’t
heard of them sooner, –they are da bomb and I want more…
Described as “a rich blend of Afro-funk, jazz, soul and
traditional African rhythms” –the KonKoma sound is good-ole-hypnotic-get-up-and-dance
live music that the doctor ordered….
The band is made up of some of Ghana’s biggest artists
including former members of Osibisa: “Alfred 'Kari' Bannerman and Emmanuel
Rentzos, and Reginald 'JoJo' Yates, Nii Tagoe, Jose Joyette, Derrick McIntyre,
Scott Baylis, Ben Hadwen, Max Grunhard and Ben Lamdin.”
I truly can’t wait to catch KonKoma live –hopefully in
Ghana --soon….. For more info or to hear more or download KonKoma’s fab music visit

More info….
Storming, brass-heavy Afro-funk Any band that puts a third of its membership on horn-blowing duties is alright by us. And so it is with KonKoma, a freshly minted nine-piece that, in the words of Alfred Bannerman, represents "a live rebirth of Ghana's music from the '70s and '80s" - a stonking amalgam of Afro-funk, highlife and jazz that we suspect might be one of this weekend's highlights. Bannerman and bandmate Emmanuel Rentzos, both former members of Osibisa, offer formidable pedigrees, having also worked alongside Bobby Womack and Hugh Masekela. But this is far from a strictly retro project. Also containing a pair of young English producers/musicians and several next-generation Ghanaians (and signed to the very cool Soundway label), this is a pan-generational band that very much stands proud and tall in the here and now. These nine men are as excited about what Ghanaian music could be as what Ghanaian music once was.
